She is deeply concerned with the ways of the mice
 
JENNYANYDOTS:
Their behavior's not good and their manners not nice
 
So when she has got them lined up on the matting
She teaches them music, crocheting and tatting

The curtain cord she likes to wind and tie it into sailor knots
She sits upon the windowsill or anything that's smooth and flat
She sits and sits and sits and that's what makes a gumbie cat

FEMALE CATS:
But...
When the day's hustle and bustle is done
Then the gumbie cat's work is but hardly begun
She thinks that the cockroaches need employment
To prevent them from idle and wanton destroyment
So she's formed from that lot of disorderly louts
A troop of well disciplined helpful boy scouts
With a purpose in life and a good deed to do
And she's even created a beetles tattoo!
 
For she's a jolly good fellow!

По ночам одна из таких кошек по имени JennyAnyDots превращается в социальную активистку: она стремится исправить манеры и повадки мышей, обучая их музыке, танцам и рукоделию, а также спасает тараканов от пагубного безделья, организуя из них отряды скаутов-тимуровцев.

ДженниЭниДатс -- первая в ряду "практических кошек", из портретов которых, собственно, и состоит "Книга старого опоссума". Все они почти без изменений вошли в текст мюзикла, дав основу для блистательных вокально-танцевальных сцен. Однако, после вопроса "Кто это будет?", которым закончился предыдущий номер, мы, зрители, склонны рассматривать всех вновь представляемых персонажей как кандидатов на смерть и перевоплощение.

А пока кошки развлекаются. Одна из них изображает gumbie cat, напяливая на себя что-то вроде куклы, каких сажают на заварочные чайники. Появляется кордебалет, составленный, по-видимому, из детей, обучающихся танцу. На этот раз они одеты домовыми мышами. ДженниЭниДатс их всячески строит, и в конце валится на пол без сил со словами "Thank you my dears".

She is sure it is due to irregular diet;
And believing that nothing is done without trying,
She sets right to work with her baking and frying.

В лондонской постановке ДженниЭниДатс представлял Мистофелис (за американскую я не уверен). С Мистофелисом вы познакомитесь в конце спектакля -- правда, под немного другим именем.

Текст Элиота в Лондоне исполнялся целиком, а в конце кошки действительно провозглашали троекратное приветствие. "Спасибо, мои дорогие!" -- отвечала им ДженниЭниДатс. Эта последняя фраза сохранилась и в американской постановке, где она следует за she 's a jolly good fellow.
